The first clear photo from the site of Wednesday night’s tragic plane crash has surfaced, showing the wreckage of an American Airlines jet in the Potomac River. The crash occurred around 9:00 p.m. EST when a military helicopter collided with the jet, which was en route from Wichita, Kansas. The flight carried 64 passengers, and the helicopter had three soldiers aboard.

Photos of the wreckage have been shared on social media, and Getty Images has also released additional images. At least 27 bodies have been recovered from the river, with search and rescue efforts continuing. Authorities confirm no survivors. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom questioned why the helicopter was in the plane’s landing path, while U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy stated both were following regular flight patterns.
