In new footage by Aline Salvi via Facebook, the audience gets a glimpse of the harrowing moments as a passenger plane crashes in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

The crash has left the entire nation in mourning and has raised serious questions about the safety of flying in such challenging environments.

The twin-engine EMB-110 Bandeirante, a small turboprop aircraft designed for short flights, took off from Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state, under reportedly poor weather conditions. As the plane approached the airstrip in Barcelos, the conditions deteriorated further, with the rain intensifying and visibility dropping.

According to eyewitnesses and security footage, the aircraft appeared to struggle during its descent. Witnesses reported that the pilot attempted to land multiple times, but the approach was unstable due to the poor weather.

In the final moments, the plane seemed to come in too fast and too low, which could have been a possible final attempt to avoid crashing.

Tragically, the plane crashed just short of the runway, skidding into a grassy area before coming to a final stop. The impact was fatal for all those onboard.

The victims aboard the flight included tourists, possibly Brazilian nationals, and two crew members. The passengers were reportedly on a fishing trip, a popular activity in the remote region of Barcelos, which is renowned for its rich biodiversity and ecosystem.

The tourists were part of a group that had traveled to the Amazon for a leisure trip.

Among the passengers were individuals from various backgrounds, united by a common passion for exploring the natural beauty of Brazil’s Amazon region.

The crew members, including the pilot and co-pilot, were experienced in flying under the challenging conditions of the Amazon, which makes this incident particularly tragic. Previously, the pilot had logged many hours navigating the complexities of the region’s airspace, which included the unpredictable weather patterns and difficult terrain that was faced.

But despite their expertise, the extreme conditions that day proved insurmountable.

Immediately following the crash, Brazilian aviation authorities launched an investigation to determine the causes of the accident. Their initial findings suggest that the severe weather conditions played a significant role, with heavy rain and low visibility making the landing extremely difficult for the crew to navigate.

The investigation is also due to examine other factors, including potential human error and the conditions of the Barcelos airstrip, which is known for being short and surrounded by dense jungle.

Experts on the topic have noted that flying in the Amazon presents unique challenges, with unpredictable weather and limited infrastructure often complicating flying operations.

Aviation analyst Felipe Souza commented on the incident:

“The Amazon is a difficult environment for aviation. The weather can change rapidly, and the terrain leaves little margin for error. Pilots flying in this region must be highly skilled and prepared for anything.”

Investigators have also recovered the aircraft’s black boxes, which record flight data and cockpit communications. These devices will be crucial as the investigation continues, as they will reconstruct the flight’s final moments. Investigators hope that the reconstruction will determine whether the crash was caused by a technical failure, human error, or a combination of unfortunate factors.

But that’s not all.

Despite the tragedy of the lives lost, the crash has also deeply affected Brazil in terms of areas where air travel is often the only practical means of transportation due to the vast distances and challenging terrain. Renewed concern about the safety of air travel in remote areas and the need for better infrastructure to support these operations is now resurfacing.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has also offered his condolences and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted:

“We are committed to finding out what happened and ensuring that the necessary measures are taken to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. The safety of our citizens is our top priority.”

Now, as Brazil and the world mourn the loss of 62 lives in this tragedy, the investigation is set to continue, with authorities determined to uncover the causes behind the tragedy. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in aviation, particularly in challenging and unpredictable environments.
